Preparing to Write the LPI
Preface
The purpose of the workbook titled Preparing to Write the Language Proficiency Index™ (LPI™), 4th Edition is to give individuals planning to write the Language Proficiency Index Test a clear indication of the format of the test and to provide them with practice exercises and a sample LPI Test. The practice exercises (provided in Parts I, II, and III of this workbook) and the sample test are in the same format as the items found on all official forms of the LPI Test.
This fourth edition contains information about what the members of the LPI marking committee look for when assigning levels to the LPI essays they are evaluating. It is important to point out that the three main criteria that are used in evaluating the essay in Part IV are the three skill areas that are tested in Parts I, II, and III – sentence structure, English usage, and development of ideas into a paragraph.
This edition also contains useful instruction on essay writing that aims to improve the candidate’s performance on the test and to contribute to his or her understanding of what it means to write English in an effective way.
